Questions & answers for bearing lubrication
1.Q: There are many types of bearing oil, how to select the right one?
A: First, consider the bearing type; second, take the bearing’s technical parameters into account, such as bearing clearance, dn value, etc.; third, depend on using conditions, such as operating temperature (bearing allows temperature rising), speed, load capacity and so on. T o sum up above factors together to select oil type with appropriate viscosity. Do not attend to everything at one time, or specially emphasis on one aspect. The easiest way is to select 1992 SH 0017L-FC bearing oil according to viscosity requirements.
2.Q: To what extent bearing oil need to be replaced?
A: No matter which kind of lubricant used, it will cause oxidation, stirring, mechanical shearing as for the heating in the course of using. In the meanwhile, due to the entering of wear powder, water, dust and other mixed matters, it can gradually deteriorate, as a result, the viscosity, acid value, moisture content increased, sludge produced, and color also become darker. Therefore, it must be regularly monitored and timely replaced according to the provisions.
3.Q: Whether only looking up the table and choosing the viscosity when selecting bearing oil?
A: Looking up the table and choosing appropriate viscosity is just the basic point. In the same lubrication system, one should also consider the need for other friction parts except for bearing, such as gears, cylinder, etc. Then comprehensively select the applicable viscosity. For those parts with great temperature change, one should consider the suitable viscosity index; under the circustances of boundary lubrication, one should consider the problem of resistance & abrasion; for higher operating temperature, to consider the thermal resistance, volatility with low oxidative stability, high flash point and other issues; furthermore, anti-corrosion & anti-rust of bearing material should also be taken into account. For outdoor machinery, one should consider the low pour point and low liquidity problems; besides, to consider lubricant’s aniline (some requires 100 or above 130 ℃) and other issues to meet the sealing material of machinery equipment; in the meanwhile, corrosion resistance & anti-rust for bearing material should also be considered. However, the key point is the viscosity, but for thoses friction parts with boundary lubrication under heavy load or impact load, the extreme pressure anti-wearness for lubricant even much more important than the viscosity. In addition, there does not allow mechanical impurities with friction in the lubricant.
Q: Both spindle oil and bearing oil can be used for bearing lubrication, what are their similarites and differences?
A: In common: similar antioxidant and anti-rust properties.
Differences: wear resistance for spindle oil is much better than the bearing oil.
Spindle oil is low viscosity grade oil (from No.2 to 22), while the viscosity grade for bearing oil is very wide, from No.2 to 460. The reason why the new industry standard classified these two as beaing oil is because that both of the spindle oil & bearing oil is used for bearing, meanwhile they have similar performance. However, in order to clarify these two kinds, the industry standar divided into L-FC class (type of antioxidant and rust-proof belongs to bearing oil) and L-FD class (type of antioxidant, rust-proof and wear resistance is spindle oil).
5.Q: Why the using range for spindle oil is so wide in low-viscosity lubricants?
A: The using range for spindle oil is indeed wide, except for spindle plain bearings, it can also be used for oil bath, spray lubrication and the lubrication of rolling bearings, while also be used for high speed spindle oil, sewing machine oil and general hydraulic oil. The reason is that in addition to antioxidant and anti-rust properties, spindle oil also has anti-wear performance, easy to take into account various performances required, especially to make up the inadequate abrasion resistance issue for general low-viscosity oil.
6.Q: The key to select spindle oil?
A: The key for selecting spindle oil is the viscosity grades. The using span for viscosity grade oil cannot be too large, otherwise may resulting in abnormal wear for the spindle. The reason why divided the original four spindle oil grades in the 1970s into the current sevent grades is based on this situation, so please pay attention when selecting.
